Coach James enters his first year as the NAZ Wranglers head coach for the 2025 season. Coach James is a veteran football coach with a background that spans both the professional and collegiate landscapes in addition to high school athletics. In both 2012 and 2017, James earned the Arena Football League Coach of the Year recognition. His resume includes an Arena Bowl appearance in 2017 as the head coach of the Tampa Bay Storm. James brings over 30 years of valuable coaching experience to the Wranglers organization. Coach James has a combined fourteen years of coaching on the collegiate level as well as his AFL experience. He has coached at almost every level of college football in various capacities. From 2020 – 2024, Coach James has been coaching at Juan Diego Catholic High School. James was the Defensive Coordinator for the football team before being elevated to the Head Coaching position following the 2021 season. He is also a teacher in the Physical Education Department, a role he has held since joining the faculty in 2020. In 2019, Coach James was the Head Coach and General Manager of the Atlantic City Blackjacks in the Arena Football League. During the 2018 football season James served as a Senior Analyst for the Saskatchewan Roughriders in the Canadian Football League. The 2018 Roughriders qualified for the CFL playoffs and had the second-best record in the league. From 2016-2018, Ron James was the Head Coach of the Tampa Bay Storm in the Arena Football League. Coach James turned the previously two-win team into an eleven-win team and earned an Arena Bowl berth in the 2017 season. The Storm became the first team in league history to go from two wins to the Arena Bowl in one year. His work in the 2017 season earned Coach James the 2017 AFL Coach of the Year award, marking this the second occasion he had garnered the honor. In 2016, Ron James was named the Head Coach and General Manager of the newly formed Portland Steel of the Arena Football League. The Portland franchise was a league run team and would only compete for one season in the AFL. The Steel qualified for the AFL playoffs under James' guidance. The 2015 season in the AFL would see Coach James serving as the Defensive Coordinator and defensive line coach for the Cleveland Gladiators. The Gladiators excelled in several defensive categories and qualified for the 2015 AFL Playoffs. In 2014, Coach James took over as Head Coach for the Pittsburgh Power in the Arena Football League after their first game of the season. The 2014 season would see the Power finish 15-3 under James' leadership, including a twelve-game winning streak to enter the AFL playoffs. The Pittsburgh Power underwent an extreme change of fortune, after a 4-14 season prior to Coach James' arrival. The Power held a 15-3 the following season under James’ guidance, marking the largest turnaround in AFL history. From 2009 – 2013, Ron James was the Head Coach of the Utah Blaze. In 2011, Coach James expanded his Blaze organizational duties serving as the Team President in conjunction to his role of Head Football Coach. Under Coach James' guidance, the 2012 Utah Blaze won a franchise record twelve regular season games and boasted the AFL's top offense. Coach James was awarded the 2012 AFL Net 10 Coach of the Year. Prior to being named Head Coach of the Blaze in 2008, James was an assistant coach in Utah under Danny White for the 2007 and 2008 seasons. During those two seasons, James served as offensive line coach and Director of Player Personnel. From 2001 – 2006, James coached for the Las Vegas Gladiator organization, serving as the Head Football Coach in 2005 and again in 2006. His 2005 Gladiator team led the AFL in total offense and during his tenure with the Gladiators, the team would break ten different franchise records in various offensive categories.Coach James also worked for the Houston Thunderbears  in 2000 and 2001, serving as the line coach and Director of Player Personnel. James began his AFL coaching career with the Albany Firebirds during their inaugural season of 1990, and again serving as an assistant coach in 1991. James was an assistant football coach at the United States Military Academy at West Point, where he also served as Admissions Support Officer from 1998 - 2000. From 1993 – 2000, Coach James was an assistant football coach at Kentucky Wesleyan College. Coach James joined the coaching staff to mentor the offensive line in 1993 and spent his last four seasons serving in the capacity of Associate Head Coach and Defensive Coordinator. Prior to coaching at Kentucky Wesleyan College, Coach James was the Defensive Coordinator at Hartwick College (from 1992-1993) and St. Lawrence University (from 1989-1992). Coach James began his coaching career at Siena College (from 1986-1989) as the linebackers coach and served as Head Coach for the Junior Varsity program in 1988. Ron James was a four-year starter at Siena College at offensive tackle, and an NCFA Al America and a two-time First Team Al Conference selection. James also saw action at defensive tackle in college. He earned a Bachelor of Arts from Siena and an MPA from Rockefeller College. Amative of Albany, NY Coach James is married to his wife, Lynn. They have a son, Brady and a daughter, Alexis and reside in Woods Cross, Utah.

Offensive Coordinator

The NAZ Wranglers are thrilled to bring on Offensive Coordinator Siaha Burley, who most recently was the Assistant Head Coach of the Arizona Rattlers for two seasons. Coach Burley was the Assistant Head Coach of the Rattlers under Kevin Guy in both 2023 and 2024. Burley recently added a 2024 IFL National Championship Title as an Assistant Head Coach to his resume, among a myriad of impressive milestones. Burley’s stellar coaching career includes Two NAL Championships as a Head Coach, an NAL Coach of the Year Award, an AFL Assistant Coach of the Year Award, and numerous winning seasons. Prior to Burley getting involved with coaching in 2011, he also had a dominant career as a player. Burley was phenomenal on the field as a wide receiver, earning an AFL Offensive Player of the Year award in 2007. During this season, Burley he became the first player in United States History to rack up over 2,000 receiving yards in a single season. Burley brings a wealth of indoor football experience to the Wranglers through both his coaching and playing career. Burley has proven to be a Championship level player, play caller, and coach who will look to continue his successes with the Wranglers. As mentioned, in 2024 and 2023, Coach Burley was the Assistant Head Coach of the Arizona Rattlers under Head Coach Kevin Guy. The Rattlers won the 2024 IFL National Championship. Prior to joining the Rattlers, Burley was the head coach of the Jacksonville Sharks in 2022 while they were a part of the National Arena League (NAL.) Coach Burley was also the head coach of the Jacksonville Sharks during the 2017, 2018 and 2019 seasons. The Sharks won the NAL Championship in both 2017 and 2019 under Coach Burley’s guidance. Prior to earning the head coaching position for the Sharks organization, Burley was the offensive coordinator for the Cleveland Gladiators of the Arena Football League at the beginning of the 2017 season. In 2016, Burley was the offensive coordinator for the Arizona Rattlers, the longstanding organization in which he spent time with as a both a coach and player throughout his career. During the 2014 and 2015 seasons, Burley was the offensive coordinator for the Orlando Predators of the AFL, where he coached under current Bay Area Panthers Head Coach Rob Keefe. Coach Burley earned the 2015 AFL Assistant Coach of the Year Award as the Predators offensive coordinator. In 2013, Burley was the offensive coordinator for the Chicago Rush of the AFL, this was his first season as an offensive coordinator. 2011 was the first year that Burley stepped into coaching for the Arizona Rattlers. After a stellar career as a wide receiver for the Arizona Rattlers and many other teams in the AFL, it was a perfect fit for Burley to become the wide receiver coach for the historic franchise. Burley spent his final season as a player with the Arizona Rattlers in 2008 and had a historic season with the Utah Blaze in 2007. As a wide receiver, Burley earned the AFL Offensive Player of the Year Award with an insane record-breaking season. Burley was also named to the All-AFL First Team, as he hauled in 166 receptions for 2,129 yards and 49 touchdowns. Burley broke the single season receiving records for both receptions and yards during that 2007 tear with the Blaze. Burley had a game football sent to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio for being the first wide receiver in United States history to eclipse 2,000 yards in a single season. During the 2007 season with the Blaze, Burley had this monumental season while playing under head coach Danny White and newly appointed Wranglers Head Coach Ron James. Coach James was the assistant head coach of the Blaze under White during that 2007 season. In 2006, during his first season with the Utah Blaze, Burley was named to the All-Arena Second Team for the second straight season. This was an insanely productive season that he would eventually top himself in 2007. Burley was a major problem for opposing defenses, as he continued to grow into one of the top receivers in the game. Burley notched 136 receptions for 1,934 yards and 44 touchdowns. He broke franchise numbers for the Blaze, that he would again break in 2007. Burley spent the 2004 and 2005 seasons playing wide receiver for the Arizona Rattlers, when he earned his first All-Arena Second Team selection for his performance on the field in 2005. Burley also earned the Arena Football League’s Writers Association Offensive Player of the Year during the 2005 season. During this season with the Rattlers, Burley scored a franchise record 45 touchdowns. Burley played for the LA Avengers in 2003, before beginning his playing career for the Orlando Predators during the 2001 and 2002 seasons. Burley was named to the AFL All-Rookie Team for his standout performance for the Predators in 2001. Burley also participated in training camp with various NFL teams throughout his playing career, including the Dallas Cowboys, Miami Dolphins, Minnesota Vikings, and the Rams. Burley played for and coached for the Orlando Predators and Arizona Rattlers years apart, bringing his Indoor career full circle, and now joins the NAZ Wranglers coaching staff. Coach Burley was born and raised in the State of Arizona, and attended Westwood High School in Mesa, Ariz. Burley was an All-City and All-Statewide receiver and defensive back for the Warriors. Burley began his collegiate career as Mesa Community College before transfering to the University of Central Florida in Orlando, Fla. Burley caught passes from eventual NFL quarterback Daunte Culpepper while at UCF and was the team’s leading receiver for each of the two seasons he played for the Knights. Coach Burley resides in Tempe, Ariz., and continues to raise his three daughters as a longtime resident of Arizona. Coach Burley’s eldest daughter currently resides in Dallas, Texas where she relocated to play college basketball at Arlington Baptist University.

The NAZ Wranglers are ecstatic to bring on Defensive Coordinator Larry Hendrix, who most recently was the defensive coordinator for the Quad City Steamwheelers during the 2024 season. Coach Hendrix was also the co-defensive coordinator for the Tucson Sugar Skulls during the 2023 season. During that season, the Sugar Skulls touted the second-best scoring defense in the Indoor Football League. Hendrix brings over 15 years of head coach and defensive coordinator experience with the indoor game to the Wranglers ahead of 2025. Regarding his new role as Northern Arizona’s defensive coordinator, Hendrix stated, “I have been around the game of indoor football for a long time, and I am excited for the opportunity to build a new culture and competitive squad in Northern Arizona.” When discussing his philosophy on defense, Hendrix said, “On defense, we will be built on speed and attacking the football.” Hendrix also added to this by stating, “Wranglers fans can look at the 2023 Sugar Skulls defense as an example of the level of play to expect this year.”As mentioned, in 2024 Coach Hendrix served as the defensive coordinator for the Quad City Steamwheelers for the second time in his career. In 2024, Quad City held opposing defenses to 218.3 yards per game, which ranked sixth in the Indoor Football League. On the contrary, the Wranglers allowed 241.6 yards per game in 2024. During the 2023 season, Hendrix was the co-defensive coordinator for the Tucson Sugar Skulls. The Sugar Skulls held opponents to 41.7 points per game in 2023, which marked the second-best metric in the IFL. Hendrix was the defensive coordinator for the North Texas Bulls of the American Arena League during their 2022 season. In 2019, coach Hendrix was the defensive coordinator for the Quad City Steamwheelers. Prior to joining Quad City, Hendrix was the Head Coach and Director of Football Operations for the Dallas Marshals of the Champions Indoor Football League. Hendrix led the Dallas Marshals for three seasons, from 2015 to 2018. The Marshals organization folded during their third season, after their original owner sold the team to establish the Quad City Steamwheelers. Hendrix followed the team’s original owner after receiving the opportunity to be the defensive coordinator for Quad City in 2019, this was the organization’s first season in the IFL. During this time span from 2015 to 2019, Hendrix was also busy scouting talented players for the BC Lions of the Canadian Football League. Starting in 2021 through present day, Hendrix is also the Junior Varsity head coach and Varsity defensive backs coach at Bishop Lynch High School in Dallas, Texas. Hendrix is a licensed counselor and teaches finance to students. Hendrix continues to mold high level student-athletes in his roles as Bishop Lynch. Prior to joining Bishop Lynch, Hendrix was the offensive coordinator and defensive backs coach at Prince of Peace Christian School located in Carrollton, Texas. Hendrix was teaching and coaching at Prince of Peace from 2016 to 2021. Hendrix was the Head Coach and Defensive Coordinator for the North Texas Crunch of the Independent Indoor Football Alliance. The IIF was a league based in the state of Texas that Hendrix helped to get started. Hendrix served as the head coach and defensive coordinator of the Crunch from 2008 to 2010, before returning to the organization again from 2012-2015. In 2008, 2009, 2010 & 2012, the Crunch won League Championships under Hendrix’s guidance. Between his time with the Crunch In 2011, Hendrix was the Head Coach and Defensive Coordinator of Bricktown Brawlers of the IFL. Prior to starting the Crunch organization, Hendrix was the defensive backs coach for the Texas Regulators of the American Professional Football League. Hendrix began his indoor coaching career in 2002 with the Oklahoma Crude of the National Indoor Football League. Hendrix was the defensive coordinator for the Crude. Mr. Hendrix played one year with the Indianapolis Colts in in 1995 and for the Calgary Stampeders of the CFL in 1996. Coach Hendrix resides in Sherman, Texas and was born and raised in the area. Coach Hendrix has been married to his wife Kecia Hendrix for over 33 years. They have 3 adult children and seven grandchildren.
 
Coach Mikell Mair 2025

Mikell Mair had a long-standing career playing Indoor Football for various teams prior to joining the Wranglers ahead of the 2024 season. Coach Mair enters year two of being an integral piece of the Wranglers staff. Mair joins the Wranglers coaching staff to assist the coaches and players. Mair will wear many hats on the side of football operations and brings his impressive resume as a player to the Wranglers. Mair has been a dominant player and played for many winning teams throughout his career. Mair is looking forward to winning in Northern Arizona as an assistant coach and the lead man for player/video operations and equipment management. Mair first gained coaching experience in Orange County, California. In 2014, as a defensive backs coach at Santa Ana College which is in Santa Ana, CA. In 2018, Mair coached linebackers at Tustin High School, which is in Tustin, CA. Mair credits both Orange County schools for his development as an outstanding player, as he played high school football at Tustin High School (2001-2003) and Junior College football at Santa Ana College (2005-2007) prior to transferring to Texas A&M University-Commerce in 2007. Mair is originally from Boston, Mass., where he started playing football in the inner-city neighborhood of Dorchester for the Boston Raiders, where he discovered his passion for football. Mair attended Texas A&M University-Commerce, where he started out as a strong safety before shifting to middle linebacker and maintained that role throughout his professional career as a player. As a senior, Mair and the Lions earned the 2009 Lone Star Conference North Division Championship title. During Mair’s first season in the Indoor Football League in 2016, he was a leader and a force for the Billings Wolves defense. Mair led the team in sacks that season and ranked second on the Wolves defense in tackles for loss. Mair also finished the season as the second leading tackler on the Wolves dominant defense in 2016. In week four of that season, Mair earned himself a Defensive Player of the Week recognition for his stellar performance against the Spokane Shock, which had the IFL’s most dominant offensive unit at the time. Mair continued to be a commanding linebacker in the IFL, as he played well for the Colorado Crush in 2017. Most recently, Mair played for the San Diego Strike Force in 2019, where he was the defensive leader in tackles during his time with the team. Mair finished the 2019 season as the second leading tackler despite not playing in the last 6 games of the season. Mair has also gained Indoor Football experience in other leagues. Late in the 2017 season, Mair was a late addition to the team and was a key piece to a stacked Vermont Bucks defense that won the Championship in the Canadian American Indoor Football League. There is one fun fact that indirectly ties Mair to the Wranglers home arena, The Findlay Toyota Center. Mair played for the Ontario Warriors of the American Indoor Football League in 2012. During that season, Mair played a game on the road against the Arizona Outlaws inside what is now the Wranglers home arena. During this game in Prescott Valley, Mair notched not one, but two interceptions, and ran them both back for touchdowns to go along with several jaw dropping tackles and 2 forced fumbles.
