NORTHERN ARIZONA WRANGLERS FALL SHORT AGAINST THE BAY AREA PANTHERS ON THE ROAD

SAN JOSE, Calif. — The Northern Arizona Wranglers dropped their second game of the season, losing to the Bay Area Panthers by a score of 50-28 on Sunday.

The Wranglers began this matchup on defense. Linebacker Kalen Hicks sacked his former teammate on third down, and forced the Panthers to kick a long field goal. After the missed field goal attempt, the Wranglers offense got the ball and had a chance to take an early lead. Quarterback CJ Fowler had his pass intercepted, which the Panthers returned for the touchdown. The offense got the immediate chance for redemption, and marched down the field and responded. Fowler threw a short pass to running back Marvin Kinsey Jr., who found the end zone. The Panthers killed this momentum quickly, when former Wranglers wide receiver RZ McCorker returned the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown. The Wranglers offensive struggles continued, as they turned the ball over on downs. Just before the end of the game's opening quarter, Hicks applied pressure on his former quarterback once again. This pressure resulted in a great interception for Wranglers defensive back Malik Sonnier. The first quarter closed with the Wranglers behind the Panthers by a score of 16-7.

In the second quarter, this game became more of a defensive battle. The Wranglers and Panthers traded defensive stops and turnovers. This quarters lone points were scored by the Panthers on the fourth drive of the quarter. The Wranglers entered the locker room at halftime down by a score of 22-7.

The Wranglers opened the second half by gaining some momentum offensively. Fowler and Kinsey Jr. connected again for the second touchdown between the quarterback and running back on a short pass. Kinsey Jr. evaded multiple defenders and plunged into the end zone, bringing the Wranglers deficit back down to eight points. The Northern Arizona defense surrendered a touchdown, which brought the score to 29-14 in favor of Bay Area. Wide receiver David Elder became an energy spark plug for the Wranglers. Elder returned the following kickoff all the way to the Panthers five-yard line. Elder capped off this drive with a rushing touchdown on fourth down.

The final quarter of this contest began with the Wranglers behind the Panthers by a score of 29-21. This game got sideways quickly on Northern Arizona. The Wranglers defense surrendered a score on the first drive of the fourth quarter. This touchdown was immediately followed by the Panthers nabbing another pick-six for their defense. The Wranglers found themselves in a deeper hole in a flash. Their following offensive possession resulted in another turnover on downs. The Panthers capitalized with another score. Seemingly in a blink of an eye, the Wranglers were behind the Panthers by a score of 50-21. Fowler connected with Elder for a late touchdown, before Bay Area kneeled and ended the game.

The Wranglers, again, showed some bright spots but have continued to struggle offensively. Elder tallied 98 total return yards in this contest and added 36 offensive yards. Elder and Kinsey notched two touchdowns apiece offesnively.  Fowler threw three touchdown passes, but also accounted for three turnovers. Hicks led the defensive unit with six total tackles, one sack and one tackle for loss. The Wranglers will need to clean some things up on a short week, as they return home to play next Saturday night against the Tucson Sugar Skulls. Northern Arizona will be back in front of their home crowd on Saturday, April 19th. The Wranglers will need to regroup and flush this game quickly to focus on improving to play the Sugar Skulls.
